No Shriners Hospitals Closing; Some May Be Outpatient-Only
"All 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children will stay open, but some eventually might become outpatient-only surgery facilities, the system that offers free specialty pediatric care said Thursday," CNN reports. "The system, which has covered all costs of its patients" care throughout its 87-year history, eventually will accept insurance from patients who have it, members of the Shriners fraternity decided in their annual convention in San Antonio, Texas. Accepting money from insurers and finding other ways to cut costs will help Shriners retain their presence in all 22 locations, said Doug Maxwell, the new president and CEO of Shriners Hospitals."

Nycomed Announces FDA Filing For Daxas(R) In COPD
Nycomed announced the submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Daxas® as a once-daily oral treatment for patients with symptomatic COPD. The NDA submission is based on encouraging results from four Phase III trials of Daxas® (roflumilast) in the treatment of symptomatic COPD. Two pivotal 12-month studies showed positive effects on exacerbation rates and pulmonary function (FEV1). Two supporting six-month studies also confirmed the efficacy of Daxas when used with standard bronchodilator treatments. Full data from all four studies are to be published during 2009.

Burgess Accepts President Obama's Offer To Meet And Discuss Health Reform Bill

Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) sent a letter to President Obama yesterday accepting his invitation to "come over to the White House and go over line-by-line" the health care reform plan the President is pushing. Last week President Obama held a health care town hall meeting in North Carolina, and offered the invitation to Members of Congress. President Obama stated, "When we come back in September, I will be available to answer any questions that members of Congress have. If they want to come over to the White House and go over line-by-line what"s going on, I will be happy to do that." In his letter to President Obama, Burgess accepts the President"s invitation and states that, as a doctor, he has several concerns with the plan and also many ideas he believes he and the President can both agree on when it comes to health reform.
