Wistar Wins Patent For 'Universal' Flu Vaccine Tech, Seeks Development Partner
Philadelphia"s Wistar Institute has been issued U.S. patent No. 7,527,798 for a synthetic vaccine technology with the potential to be developed into a universal flu vaccine that could eliminate annual flu shots and protect against pandemics. Wistar is seeking a corporate partner to license and develop the vaccine, which has been tested in animals and currently is in prototype form. The patent pertains to technology developed by Walter Gerhard, professor emeritus and former professor of immunology at Wistar, and Laszlo Otvos, formerly an associate professor of immunology at Wistar. The vaccine prototype contains an engineered peptide that mimics a viral coat protein called M2 that remains largely constant from year to year.

New Support For A Controversial Mechanism Underlying An Irregular Heart Beat
The most common form of human heart beat irregularity (atrial fibrillation) can be fatal if left untreated. It has been suggested that it is caused, in part, by calcium leaking from a cellular store in heart cells, potentially through the RyR2 channel, although this mechanism remains controversial. However, a team of researchers at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, and Dresden University of Technology, Germany, has provided support for this hypothesis by showing that the protein CaMKII can enhance RyR2-mediated calcium leak, promoting atrial fibrillation in mice.

Shocking New Figures Of Diabetes Complications Released, UK

New figures from the NHS Information Centre reveal a sobering tally of over 300 heart attacks, 300 strokes, 65 foot or toe amputations and 38 leg amputations among people with diabetes each week. Due to the way hospital data is recorded, these figures may well be lower than actual numbers as occurrences in the same person are only counted once. "Diabetes is the biggest health challenge currently facing the UK and cardiovascular disease is the most common diabetes complication," said Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK. "While we can"t say for certain whether diabetes is the sole contributing factor behind these new figures, we do know from a wealth of previous research that there is a very strong link. "It"s important to remember, however, that people with diabetes can minimise the chances of developing these devastating complications by maintaining good blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol control, taking regular physical activity, eating a healthy balanced diet, and taking any prescribed medications."
