South Africa"s tuberculosis treatment default rate has decreased and the treatment success rate has increased, a delegation from the WHO"s Stop TB Partnership said recently, SAPA/IOL reports (7/17). A review of South Africa"s TB program examined the use of DOTS, health system strengthening, TB/HIV collaboration, drug-resistant TB, public-private partnerships and other aspects of the program, according to Africa Science News Service (7/17).

World's First Deep Brain Stimulation Device Approved For Treatment Of Psychiatric Condition In Europe
Medtronic announced that Reclaim(R) Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy has received CE (Conformite Europeene) Mark approval for the treatment of chronic, severe treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This is the first time that a deep brain stimulation therapy has gained approval in Europe for the treatment of a psychiatric disorder.

The head-to-head comparisons of medical treatments show how easily a seemingly small provision can become embroiled in major controversy, and demonstrate the potential for indefinite debate. Republicans raise the flag of rationing, saying comparative effectiveness research shouldn"t be used to deny care, while Democrats say they basically agree, but insist on looser language.
